Home featured at San Francisco Heritage’s 2024 Gala!
On September 5, 2024, Jarrel Phillips was invited to present his project, Home, at San Francisco Heritage’s (SFH) 2024 Gala, and it was an unforgettable evening! The event took place at the War Memorial and Performing Arts Center, featuring an array of delicious food, vibrant socializing, and networking opportunities with both new and familiar faces. The night included a series of presentations showcasing projects that celebrate the rich history and heritage that define our beloved city.
This year’s gala theme was “A Night Celebrating Japantown, the Fillmore, and the 50th Anniversary of Moving Victorians.” Phillips shared stories from his upbringing in San Francisco, particularly in the Fillmore district and the home he grew up in owned by his maternal grandparents. He spoke passionately about his project, performed capoeira with his group, Capoeira Ijexa, and screened his 2015 short film, I Am San Francisco: Black Past and Presence (IAMSF). This film, produced by Phillips, delves into the social and cultural values that shape Black life and culture in San Francisco.
